The End

Finally I have finished the 23 things. Although I didn't spend a lot of time on most of them, at least I did look at all of them. The most interesting to me, that I didn't know anything about before, was MOLDI. I enjoyed playing with the graphics generator, making my cat picture into a pop art masterpiece. So when I have some extra time, I think I will go back to some of these "things" and get more comfortable with them.

MOLDI

Being able to listen to books or music online or download to an Ipod is probably the most interesting thing I have learned about in the 23 Things. The home page of CML makes it so easy to browse the titles and although I haven't listened to anything yet, I did put some titles on my wish list.

CML toolbox

I like the "highligher" tool in the toolbox since I often look up book titles at home and then order them from CML. Having the toolbar is also helpful for checking my account at home.

Googledocs

I understand sharing word documents that are online and not just your own file would be helpful in group work or joint editing. Many times my husband has edited papers for ours sons and they emailed the documents back and forth. Using googledocs would probably be easier. I'm sure library working groups could do the same thing and it would make it easier for a group to read and edit documents or spreadsheets.

Podcasts

Today I learned about podcasting and explored the sites for something interesting to listen to. I am not one to listen to radio news or interviews. I did find an interview with Sara Moulton done at the CIA about her job at Gourmet Magazine.

craigslist

Craigslist is wonderful! I look at it a lot for furniture, especially furniture in Clintonville. I bought a nice, small coffee table from the '50's for $25 this summer. Last week I got a rowing machine for my husband for $45. However, when we got it home and he tried it, he didn't like it. Looking at Craigslist is like going to the thrift store at home on your computer.

You Tube

You Tube is a great site for wasting hours of time looking at videos of funny cats and things I missed on TV like Tina Fey being Sarah Palin on SNL. Mostly I like the funny cats, especially the bengal cats running on what looks like a big gerbil wheel. Or mad cats, or playing cats. Or cat vs. turtle. Lots and lots of funny things to watch when you could be doing something productive.

CML wiki

I added my blog to the list of participant on the CML wiki. I also added my favorite place to shop--Home Goods in Lewis Center, and my favorite blog which is Welldressedlibrarian.blogspot.com.

Wikis

I like Wikipedia. It has lots of information that is easy to find. However, you can't trust everything in it, since so many people can edit it, and they may be wrong. Other wikis, like the CML wiki, can be useful but I find they can have too much useless information.

Library 2.0

So what is the big deal about Library 2.0? It seems like a natural progression to me. Computers are more available. People interact more through computers. People expect libraries to follow. Of course it it a good thing, and it makes (some) people able to find information on their own, faster and better. And at home too! That's the part I like. Even at home I can order books and look up other information. As technology changes and improves our lives it also improves the libraries.

delicious to some

but not to me.
del.icio.us may be good for a lot of people who look at certain sites frequently and want to take their bookmarks with them. I can understand that. I can understand tagging, a way of dividing bookmarks based on what they are for. This is not something I would use. I have my bookmarks on my home computer. Easy to use. Right there at the top. So it may be great for many, but no thanks.

Library Thing

Okay, I looked at Library Thing. I joined, added some books and looked around. I don't like it as much as GoodReads, which I have been a member of for over a year now. All of my book lists are on GoodReads. I have friends on GoodReads. Sorry Library Thing, I won't be coming back.

Twitter

I joined Twitter and look at it occasionally. It seems usless to me. What are you doing now? who really cares. If I want to know what someone is doing I will call them or send an email. Maybe I'm just old. Maybe kids really like this site.

Bloglines and RSS

Although I joined Bloglines and added some blogs to my list, I don't think I would ever use this program. I use bookmarks on my computer. I don't follow many blogs or sites.
So thanks, but no thanks.

My favorite library related blog. Even though he blogs about other topics, his insights into library work are the best, and most amusing.

This is the link for a program on WOSU about a computer program for doctors and medical student to use to practice surgery on the temporal bone. My son has been working on this project at the Ohio Supercomputer Center for several years. It is his project for his Ph.D in computer graphics.

Technology and quilting

http://quiltersloftcompany.blogspot.com/2008/06/qbot-whats-new-in-quilting-technology.html

Machine quilting is now easier with QBOT. You can even input your own designs. I can't imagine having one of these, but it would be fun to use.

The blogs of others

It is interesting to look at the blogs of other CML "learners & players" and see how adept some are at this new way to communicate. I think I am a somewhat creative person, yet working in this medium does not come naturally to me. I need something to hold on to, to move around with my hands.
